2019 BMW i3 gains bigger 42.2kWh battery

Change improves range by around 30 per cent

The BMW i3 has been updated with an improved battery pack, which is now rated at 120Ah of capacity and 42.2kWh of gross energy storage.

This is the second battery pack upgrade for the i3: in 2016 the original 60Ah/22.6kWh unit was replaced by a 90Ah/33kWh pack.

BMW claims the new 120Ah battery gives the standard i3 a range of between 285 and 310 kilometres using the WLTP standard, up from the 235 to 255km rating of the 90Ah car.

In the i3s, the upgraded pack is rated at 270 to 285 kilometres of range, up from the outgoing model's quoted figure of 235 to 245km.

The electric motors in the i3 and i3s remain unchanged, and are still rated at 125kW and 135kW, respectively.

Other updates for the i3 range include matrix LED headlights, and a new exterior colour option (Jucaro beige with grey highlights) with a matching interior design.

There's also a new optional sports pack for the standard i3, which adds many i3s components, including the 10mm lower sports suspension setup, black wheel arch protectors, 20-inch alloy wheels and mixed-size tyre combination.

Australia

The updated i3 range will become available globally from November 2018. We're waiting to hear back from the BMW Australia about local availability and timing.
