2021 Drive Car of the Year – Best Large Luxury Car

It’s Audi versus Mercedes-Benz with a strong challenger from Genesis in the large luxury sedan segment.

Drive Car of the Year 2021 - Best Large Luxury Car

Finalists:

They once ruled the driveways and roads of Australia’s wealthiest postcodes, a four-wheeled sign you had made it in life. Large sedans wearing badges, predominantly from Germany, sometimes England, oozed prestige, with big powerful engines matched only by large, comfortable interiors.

Times have changed, those same driveways now populated by large prestige SUVs, still predominantly wearing German badges with a smattering of Japanese and occasionally British. But, that change in consumer taste does not diminish what these three finalists in the Large Luxury Car segment bring to the table – comfort, performance, prestige.

The trio is spearheaded by the standard-bearer for the segment, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, a car that has always defined what it means to be a large luxury car. German rival Audi, has tapped into that formula with aplomb, its Audi A6 a luxurious blend of elegance and performance. Now a challenger brand from Korea – Genesis, the luxury arm of Hyundai – has done its best to emulate that formula with its all-new G80 sedan.

And the Winner is...

Audi A6

The perfect marriage of technology and luxury. The Audi A6 is the understated executive choice.

Three strong contenders from three different brands made for a difficult time for the DCOTY judges. In the end, it came down to what it means to be a large luxury sedan and which of our three finalists best fulfilled that brief.

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class might be the sales-race winner in this segment, but its mid-life update has neutered what once made this car a standout.

That’s not the case with the Genesis G80, which combines plenty of grunt from its six-cylinder engine with an unquestionably luxurious interior to enter the segment with aplomb and composure.

But, the judges found it impossible to ignore the Audi A6 which presented as the complete package. With a lusty six-cylinder engine and beautifully appointed interior, the A6 is the new standard-bearer for the large luxury car class.
