2021 Ferrari Roma available in Australia – priced from $409,888 plus on-road costs

The first of Ferrari's new family of Grand Tourers has landed on our shores.

The 2021 Ferrari Roma has hit the showroom floor for Australian buyers.

The latest prancing horse marks a new era for Ferrari and is the first in a new family of Grand Tourers.

With COVID-19 causing delays across the European auto industry, local buyers are only now getting the chance to see the new model up close since the model was announced in late 2019.

Named after the country’s capital, the Roma draws inspiration from the most legendary Ferrari front-engined GT models of the 1960s.

However, some would argue that it's taken inspiration from other manufacturers. The rear lamps, for instance, are similar to those on the Chevrolet Camaro, and many design elements are reminiscent of Aston Martin's current crop of sports cars.

Other commentators suggest the style doesn't look like a true Ferrari – this isn't necessarily negative, as the brand expects 70 per cent of its Roma clientele will be all-new.

The shape and overall look is an ode to the classic Ferrari 250 GT Lusso, with its distinctive long bonnet and overhang. The side has been kept very simple, and the back modern and compact.

The unique LED headlights have been filtered down from the Ferrari SP Monza and the aforementioned tail-lights aren’t traditional either, as Ferrari opted for something flatter and modernised.

The new Roma is packed with tech, and Ferrari have pushed forward with the concept of 'eyes on the road, hands on the wheel' – a philosophy introduced by the sports car company to its drivers all of the essential controls on the steering wheel itself.

For the Roma, Ferrari has also introduced a touchpad to the right of the steering, which gives the driver the ability to access the central screens, while adaptive cruise control and voice activation is on the left. Traditional controls such as indications, headlights and wipers remain.

In the cabin, Maranello's designers wanted to create the feeling of a dual-cockpit; one side for the driver and the other for the passenger. The company also strived for opulence using high-end materials such as carbon fibre, Alcantara, chromed aluminium and full-grain Frau leather.

All of this for a starting price of $409,888 plus on-road costs. Demand for the model is reported high, with buyers waiting a minimum of 12 months to take delivery – assuming no further coronavirus-related delays.
