2020 Mazda2 gets $5400 price rise as facelift hits showrooms

The Mazda2 city hatch and sedan range has been halved from 14 models to seven – and prices have risen by up to $5420 as another facelift arrives in local showrooms.

The previous Mazda2 hatch ranged from $15,570 to $24,400 plus on-road costs but there are now only three model grades from $20,990 to $25,990 plus on-road costs, putting it in line with the prices of small cars that are the next size up, such as the Kia Cerato and Hyundai i30.

The Mazda2 sedan range has also increased from $15,570 to $24,400 plus on-road costs and also starts from $20,990 and tops out at $25,990 plus on-road costs but has been trimmed to just two model grades.

A manual transmission is now only offered as an option on the base model hatch and sedan; the six-speed was previously available on all grades.

The price rises of up to 30 per cent accompany a subtle design makeover for the current generation Mazda2 released in 2014. The updated look is expected to keep the Mazda2 fresh before an all-new model arrives in about three years.

Handsfree smartphone-mirroring tech such as Apple Car Play and Android Auto is now standard across the range.

Advanced safety features such as blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and lane-keeping assistance are standard on all models, while pedestrian detection has been added to the low-speed city autonomous emergency braking system.

All models come with a rear-view camera but the flagship Mazda2 GT hatch (pictured) gains a 360-degree camera.

The 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine has been given a modest power bump from 79kW to 82kW of power and 139Nm to 144Nm of torque, but still runs on regular unleaded petrol.

Mazda says new seats offer better back support and improved comfort.

While the price hike puts the Mazda into the category of small cars that are the next size up, the company says the Mazda2 has many safety features others in the city-car class lack.

“The 2020 update to Mazda2 adds some premium safety technology never-before-seen in vehicles at this price point in Australia,” said Mazda’s director of marketing, Alastair Doak.

The updated Mazda2 is due in Australian showrooms this month, although there are still healthy numbers of runout models.
