2020 Audi A1 pricing and specs

All-new entry-level premium hatchback to finally arrive in November, priced from $32,350 plus on-road costs.

The 2020 Audi A1 Sportback will be launching Down Under next month, with the German marque detailing pricing and specifications for its three-tier compact hatchback range.

Priced from $32,350 plus on-road costs (30 TFSI), the new-generation A1 makes the switch to the Volkswagen Group's MQB A0 underpinnings, along with offering more space, technology, along with an overhauled design.

Compared to its predecessor, the new A1 is 56mm longer, while the wheelbase has been stretched by a massive 94mm. Thanks to the increase in size, the boot area has increased by 65L to 335L.

Kicking off the range is the A1 30 TFSI, powered by a 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine shared with the related Volkswagen Polo. Outputs are rated at 85kW (5000-5500rpm) and 200Nm (2000-3000rpm), while fuel use is claimed at 5.4L/100km on the combined cycle (95 RON minimum).

Driving the front wheels via a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch automatic as standard, the 30 TFSI claims to hit 100km/h from a standstill in 9.4 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 203km/h.

Equipment highlights for the entry model include 16-inch alloy wheels, heated and electrically-adjustable side mirrors, an 8.8-inch MMI infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, two USV outlets (1x USB-A and 1x USB-C), DAB+ digital radio, an 80W six-speaker audio system, autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, along with six airbags and Isofix points on the outboard rear seats.

Stepping up to the mid-range A1 35 TFSI bumps pricing up to $35,290 plus on-road costs, and adds extra equipment like 17-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry with push-button start, wireless smartphone charging, the interior lighting package, a front centre armrest and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror.

The 35 TFSI also gets a new 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine making 110kW (5000-6000rpm) and 250Nm (1500-3500rpm), driving the front wheels again via a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission.

Audi claims the 1.5-litre A1 will hit 100km/h in 7.7 seconds, and hit a top speed of 222km/h. Fuel use, meanwhile, is rated at a combined 5.8L/100km (95 RON minimum).

Finally, the A1 40 TFSI S line is the performance leader, priced from $46,450 plus on-road costs.

The 40 TFSI shares its 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with the Volkswagen Polo GTI, developing a healthy 147kW (4400-6000rpm) and 320Nm (1500-4400rpm), mated to a six-speed S tronic dual-clutch auto.

Audi says the top-spec A1 will accelerate from 0-100 in just 6.5 seconds, and hit a top speed of 235km/h. It'll also use 6.4L/100km on the combined cycle (95 RON minimum).

With a decent price bump comes a decent increase in standard specification. The A1 40 TFSI S line picks up 18-inch alloy wheels, red brake calipers, adaptive dampers with Audi drive select, the S line exterior package, LED headlights and tail-lights, electric folding exterior mirrors, a larger 10.1-inch MMI touch navigation system with Audi connect plus and wireless Apple CarPlay, an upgraded 10.25-inch Virtual Cockpit driver's display, sports front seats, paddle shifters, dual-zone climate control.

As is the way with premium brands, an array of extra cost options and packages will be available depending on variant.

The 30 TFSI and 35 TFSI are both available with the Style pack ($2990), which brings the 40 TFSI S line's full LED lighting front and rear with dynamic indicators, one inch larger alloys (17s for the 30 TFSI, 18s for the 35 TFSI), upgraded interior lighting, and folding side mirrors.

Buyers of the 35 TFSI can also opt for the Technik pack ($3200) which upgrades the infotainment system to the flagship 10.1-inch navigation system with Audi connect plus, wireless Apple CarPlay the fully-featured Virtual Cockpit digital instruments, an upgraded 180W audio system with eight speakers, along with the luggage compartment package.

The flagship 40 TFSI S line will be available with the S line interior package ($1100), bringing Alcantara/leatherette upholstery, a black headliner, stainless steel pedals, a flat-bottomed sports steering wheel, 'silver grey' trim inlays, along with grey cabin accents.

Also on offer for the 40 TFSI S line is the Premium plus pack ($2990) – adding features like adaptive cruise control, park assist, Bang & Olufsen 3D premium audio, leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, rear privacy glass, the colour ambient lighting package, and the luggage compartment package.

Finally, the new A1 is offered with a pair of pre-paid service plans, with three years of maintenance asking for $1480, and a five-year plan quoted at $1990.
