2018 Subaru XV previewed in Geneva

The next-generation, 2018 Subaru XV crossover has just been previewed at the 2016 Geneva motor show by the imaginatively named XV Concept.

Arriving four months after the Tokyo premiere of the concept version of the next Impreza hatch and three after the Impreza sedan concept, the XV concept signposts the design direction for the next-generation model, the third piece in the Impreza-based puzzle.

Beyond the obvious concept car exaggerations, it’s clear the next-generation Subaru XV won’t stray too far from the winning formula of jacking up the Impreza hatch and adding some chunky body cladding to sell a more adventurous image.

Subaru calls the design language on show “Dynamic X Solid”. It features more distinctive character lines, “ample road clearance” and “luggage space required of a crossover vehicle” — an area the current car is no star in.

Subaru is keeping very quiet on details, but has confirmed dimensions of 4520mm long, 1920mm wide and 1570mm tall (120mm longer, 120mm wider and 130mm taller than the Impreza concept), on a shared 2670mm wheelbase.

This makes it a little larger than the likes of the Nissan Qashqai, let alone the properly baby-sized Mazda CX-3.

Mechanical details for the new concept and its production offshoot have not been revealed, although Subaru has spoken at length of its plans to introduce electric assistance to its drivetrains, mainly in the form of an advanced new all-wheel drive system.

Those wanting cabin images or more specific details will have to wait, as this appears to be a design project only. Nevertheless, the next-generation Subaru XV is tipped to hit Northern Hemisphere markets next year as a 2018 model.

Subaru Australia’s importer will be keen to get it here, given the current XV halved its market share in the booming small SUV market last year to 7.2 per cent. Its 7168 sales represented a 38 per cent year-on-year drop.

The next Subaru XV will again sit below the next-generation Forester, as previewed last October by the Viziv Future Concept.
