2018 Holden Commodore and Opel Insignia:: The clever art of camouflage

Today we were able to confirm, as had been expected, that the 2018 Holden Commodore will indeed be based on the next-generation Opel Insignia due to launch in mid-2017.

While it's a special car for Australia because it will replace the Commodore we know and love, it's also special because of the type of camouflage used on its body.

Unlike a lot of camouflaged prototype vehicles that use swirly lines and fabric based car bras, the Insignia has taken things to the next level with clever use of durable, lightweight plastics. And, while it's not unique, we wanted to take a closer look at it.

The plastic moulds sit around the front, sides and rear concealing almost all of the car's body lines. As you can see in our artist's impression, buried beneath that cladding is actually quite a good looking car.

It's the same story inside the cabin. The vehicles we drove are 65 per cent prototypes with less than 2000km on the clock. These are some of the earliest Insignia prototypes on the road, meaning that a lot of the interior is yet to be completed.

Parts of the interior had smooth mold cast plastic that sits in place of the final materials interior designers are currently working on.

To get a closer look at the camouflage used on the 2018 Holden Commodore/Opel Insignia, check out the video above.

What do you think of the plastic molding employed on the vehicle in the images?
