Every year Porsche hosts a very special Woman With Drive event – this year a group of 20 ladies were put through their paces at the Porsche Sport Driving School at Mount Cotton near Brisbane. After flying in from across Australia, we all gathered to find out what was in store.
The day was designed to not only teach us some new driving skills, but also to get to know the range of cars, and have a whole lot of fun along the way.
I’m an advocate for everyone upgrading their driving skills and building confidence behind the wheel – and everyone was excited to be there.
A quick demonstration on seating position and we were ready to roll.
First up, the Road Tour Circuit.
Our expert instructors took us for a lap around the private test track, talking through the markers – when to brake, how to hit the apex and how to smoothly come out of the bends.
Then it was our turn behind the wheel and we rotated through the Cayman S, Boxter S, Carrara S, Carrera 4 S.
The ladies loved it, of course a few cones fell victim, and it’s fast enough and challenging enough to get my adrenaline pumping.
Next it was on to my favourite, oversteer and understeer on a slippery circular track in a 911 Carrera and also a Cayman.
I was determined to slide my way around the whole circuit – after a few spin outs and sideways slips – I think I managed to get it coordinated.
ABS braking on a wet track was next. It was great to see all of the women really getting into it, letting go of their fears and trusting the capabilities of those machines.
We were each able to do a couple of runs in the Cayenne Turbo, 911 Carrera, Boxter and Panamera.
Girls can get really competitive and this day was certainly no different. The motorkhana course was the final challenge, putting together all of the skills we’d learned across the day.
Being one of the only people here that drive for a living, I was feeling some pressure to perform.
It was beautiful to see everyone supporting each other and cheering people on, yet no one held back, committed to clocking the best time they could.
It was interesting to take the different cars through the course, the Boxter, 911, Carrera and Macan Turbo.
I also took the opportunity to have a chat with Woman With Drive ambassador – and our host for the day – Sonia Kruger.
Heading towards the end of the day, a quick check of the tally board confirmed I was hanging on to the lead!
I was fairly confident going into the presentations – and yessss, I scored a brand new Porsche.
That topped off what was an absolutely fabulous day – behind the wheel of some fantastic cars alongside a bunch of truly remarkable women.
