Mk2 Golf GTI vs Up! GTI drag race - video

The new Volkswagen Up! GTI has been hailed as something of a spiritual successor to the Mk1 or Mk2 Golf GTI. It's light, makes a similar amount of power and, unlike the Polo and Golf GTI in Australia, is offered with a manual transmission. Which is faster, though? With 86kW on tap from a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol engine, the performance Up! isn't exactly a powerhouse, making it a much better rival for the 86kW Mk2 GTI than a modern Golf. Progress, huh.

In a recent interview Diess told Autocar, "I think with the three [GTI models] we have now, we are set". Above: The recently revealed Up GTI Concept.

A successor to the little Audi A2 city car, discontinued in 2005, is reportedly being developed as a new entry model even smaller than the light A1. The A2 was never offered in Australia, but a former local offering - the Volkswagen Up! - is expected to form the basis of Audi’s littlest new offering.
