Volkswagen Golf to be dropped in the US - report

Volkswagen USA looks set to drop standard versions of the Golf hatchback when the eighth-generation model goes into production, according to a new report out of North America. Motor 1 says it has "learned some eye-opening news" from a "high-ranking Volkswagen employee", who reportedly told the publication non-performance versions of the compact hatch and wagon won't be available in the next generation, with only the GTI and R hot hatch variants to soldier on.

2020 Volkswagen T-Roc R unveiled

The Volkswagen T-Roc R has been revealed this week ahead the 2019 Geneva motor show, featuring the company's 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine tuned to deliver 221kW of power and 400Nm of torque. This is channelled to the ground via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and an all-wheel drive system. The hot crossover has a claimed 0-100km/h time of 4.9 seconds, and an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h.

Volkswagen: Next-gen R models to be more 'extreme' - report

Volkswagen says its future R-branded performance models will be more 'extreme' than the current crop, hinting at a next-generation portfolio that could include a crazy Golf R, R versions of the upcoming I.D. electric family, along with R SUVs. Speaking with media at the Beijing motor show – as reported by Auto Express – Jurgen Stackamann, Volkswagen's sales and marketing boss, said the company's R brand will move away from the understated vibe of the current line-up.
