Toyota plug-in hybrids not a priority

Some of the world’s biggest automotive manufacturers are moving to a future where plugging in to a power point to do your daily commute is a viable reality, but Toyota isn’t following the same path. Companies such as Volkswagen, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Hyundai and Mitsubishi are pushing for a world where electric power can be used part-time, offering plug-in hybrid drivetrains in mainstream models in major markets around the world.

You may remember last month Toyota began an advertising campaign calling on the public to vote on what it believes the plural of Prius should be. A shortlist of five was created – Prii, Priuses, Prien, Prium and Prius – with people encouraged to vote for their favourite. (For the record, Prii currently leads the way with 40 percent of the vote, ahead of Priuses (27 percent), Prius (15 percent), Prium (11 percent) and Prien (eight percent).)

Australian Orocobre to supply lithium to Toyota

Australian minerals explorer Orocobre Ltd has reached a joint venture deal with a sibling company of Toyota Motor Corp to supply the Japanese automaker with lithium for its next-generation hybrid vehicles. Toyota Tsusho Corporation, 21.8 percent owned by Toyota, will provide US$4.5 million (AUD$4.9 million) to fund the completion of the Definitive Feasibility Study of Orocobre’s flagship Salar de Olaroz Lithium-Potash Project in Argentina.
