US regulations to allow fully-driverless vehicles

New rules from the US North American Highway Transport Authority (NHTSA) could allow fully driverless vehicles on American roads. An announcement from the US Department of Transportation, operating through the NHTSA, will "reconsider the necessity and appropriateness of its current safety standards" on autonomous vehicles, taking "active steps to prepare for the future by engaging with new technologies to ensure safety without hampering innovation".

Kia: Over 500,000 North American cars recalled

Kia has recalled 507,000 vehicles in North America, over concerns an electrical fault could stop their airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioners working in an accident. UPDATE, 13/06/2018: The story has been updated to clarify why no Australian cars are impacted.

US draft legislation frees self-driving cars from safety standards

A bipartisan draft bill relating to "highly automated vehicles" has been released, and it seeks to significantly reduce the burden on car makers and other companies working to develop, test and deploy self-driving car and autonomous vehicle technology on public roads. As currently worded, the new bill would exempt up to 100,000 self-driving cars per year, per company, from having to comply with existing car safety legislation.

Honda recalls 400,000 Odyssey, MDX cars over airbag fault

More than 400,000 Honda Odyssey and MDX models have been recalled around the world to fix a defect with the cars' airbag systems. Approximately 342,000 Honda Odyssey people-movers and 63,400 Honda MDX SUVs are affected by the recall globally, including 374,000 in the US.
