Mazda: RX-9 not coming in 2020

Mazda says it’s already too late to introduce a rotary sports car to celebrate its 100 year anniversary, as it seeks to firm up its financials before it dives head first into a halo product. Speaking to CarAdvice at the Tokyo motor show this week, Mazda’s director and senior managing executive officer of R&D, Kiyoshi Fujiwara, confirmed the reported 2020 timeline of the next-generation rotary sports car, first previewed by the RX-Vision in Tokyo two years ago, is now unlikely.

Mazda RX-9: successor to RX-7 hero due in 2020 - report

The Mazda RX-9 and an accompanying next-generation rotary engine, dubbed SkyActiv-R, has reportedly been approved for production by the Japanese company's board. Japanese magazine Holiday Auto claims that in 2017 Mazda will debut a successor to the RX-7, which went out of production in 2002.

Mazda RX rotary sportscar has a “definite” business case for Australia

Mazda Australia says it can definitely make a business case for the next-generation RX vehicle, with the brand's local boss admitting a rotary-powered sports car is as much about making a brand statement as making money. “Definitely,” Mazda Australia CEO Martin Benders told CarAdvice at this week’s Tokyo motor show when asked if there was a business case for a new RX car.

Mazda RX-9 rotary to get Toyota hybrid setup: report

According to a number of international reports, Mazda is currently developing the next-generation in its rotary-powered sports cars. Called the Mazda RX-9, inside word has it it will be powered by a hybrid rotary engine developed in part by Toyota.
