Patent filings hint at Mazda RX-9

Recently-discovered patent filings suggest Mazda could be developing a new two-door coupe powered by a rotary engine. Motor magazine in Japan has recently uncovered a patent for a "vehicle shock absorption structure". The accompanying diagram shows a new spaceframe design with a small engine bay, which seems too snug to fit a non-rotary internal combustion engine.

2018 Mazda 3 to be previewed in Tokyo

Mazda has confirmed a pair of concept cars for the Tokyo motor show later this month, one likely previewing the next-generation Mazda 3 small car, and the other giving a glimpse of the company's next instalment of its 'Kodo' design language. The company says its theme for the 2017 event is "Celebrate Driving", hinting at the company's plans to continue offering fun-to-drive cars in the wake of the push for autonomous vehicles.

Mazda RX-9: successor to RX-7 hero due in 2020 - report

The Mazda RX-9 and an accompanying next-generation rotary engine, dubbed SkyActiv-R, has reportedly been approved for production by the Japanese company's board. Japanese magazine Holiday Auto claims that in 2017 Mazda will debut a successor to the RX-7, which went out of production in 2002.

Mazda RX-9 could use 1.6-litre 16X rotary engine

Mazda is revealing more details of what is likely to be the new Mazda RX-9 set to follow in the footsteps of the old Mazda RX-7. There's also more details revealed on the 16X engine, which is now well into the development stages. The new model will be a strict two-door coupe unlike the recent Mazda RX-8 four-door arrangement. It is also expected to use Mazda's new 16X rotary engine which is said to be 'quite a bit bigger' than the current twin-rotor design.
