Toyota: ‘hydrogen cars are ready, we’re just waiting for refuelling points’

Japanese car giant Toyota says Australia is “perfectly placed” to adopt hydrogen cars, but the lack of refuelling points is holding back the technology. Toyota and Hyundai already produce showroom-ready hydrogen cars but can’t sell them to the public in Australia because there is nowhere to refuel them.

Toyota Australia announces multi-million dollar hydrogen filling station at Altona

Toyota and the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) are co-funding a $7.4 million Hydrogen Centre at the company’s old manufacturing site in Altona, west of Melbourne. Existing manufacturing infrastructure will be repurposed into “Victoria's first integrated hydrogen site”, complete with an electrolyser, commercial-grade hydrogen refuelling station and an ‘education centre’ with live demonstrations of how the tech works.

Autonomous driving better suited to hydrogen fuel-cell EVs: Hyundai

Hyundai’s global boss says the power demands of a fully-autonomous vehicle will require a great deal of processing power that today’s pure electric vehicles may find more difficult to provide. Speaking to CarAdvice at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas this week, Hyundai’s global vice chairman, Chung Eui-sun, said his company’s investment in hydrogen technology is with a long-term view that also encompasses the benefits it brings to level four and five autonomous driving.
