The Volkswagen Golf R will farewell showrooms with with a new eye-searing palette. Where VW's primo hot hatch has always rocked a sensible, buttoned-up design language when compared to outlandish offerings such as the Ford Focus RS and Honda Civic Type-R, the Golf R Final Edition - as the name suggests, the last hurrah for the seventh-generation model - doesn't stick to the script.

Electric park brakes are more compact than their mechanical counterparts, can automatically activate/deactivate, and make life easier for the vast majority of everyday drivers. But they have removed one element of the average petrolhead's (closed road/private course) repertoire – the handbrake turn. In this video, Chris Harris and Rory Reid from Top Gear set out to see what happens if you yank (and hold) the parking brake at high speed in a Volkswagen Golf R.

Volkswagen Golf R gets a European power cut

Volkswagen has followed Seat in cutting power from its range-topping hot hatch, slicing 8kW from the Golf R's outputs in light of WLTP testing. Whereas the Golf R gets a watered-down 'hot-weather tune' in Australia, producing 213kW from its 2.0-litre displacement, cooler European climes were granted access to the full 228kW available from the EA888 turbocharged engine.

Volkswagen Australia's hot hatch onslaught

Australian buyers purchase more Volkswagen hot hatches per capita than almost every other market worldwide, giving the company's local arm an excuse to roll out new models and special editions over the next year or so. Around 25 per cent of all Golfs sold here, for instance, wear GTI or R badges. In response, the company is about to launch the cheapest Golf GTI in 14 years, and a new entry stripped-back grade of the R.
