Australia's first lithium-ion battery production facility to open this year

Construction of Australia’s first lithium-ion battery production facility has begun near Newcastle, with commercial vehicle power packs due to go into production by July. The 4000 square metre site – run by start-up Energy Renaissance – will produce batteries tailored to Australian weather conditions, with a focus on commercial vehicles and buses.

The son of a disgraced former Volkswagen boss has emerged as one of the key players in developing a new 'miracle' battery which could transform the landscape of the automotive industry. According to Business Insider Germany, Martin Winterkorn Junior reportedly turned down a job at Apple to instead be part of a major project at QuantumScape – a US start-up which enjoys backing from the likes of Volkswagen and Bill Gates.

Ferrari slams the brakes on an electric supercar

Ferrari has poured cold water on the idea of a pure electric supercar, claiming current battery technology is not good enough. The bold statement comes despite a number of rival brands planning to release electric supercars in the near future. In an interview with UK magazine AutoCar, Ferrari’s chief marketing and commercial officer Enrico Galliera said suitable battery technology is more than five years away.

GM and Honda pair up on next-gen batteries

General Motors and Honda have announced a partnership to develop advanced battery components, in an attempt to speed up the rollout of electric cars that are attractive to consumers. The agreement will see the two companies collaborate on development of GM's next-generation battery systems, with Honda to source its battery modules from the American giant.

BMW batteries to have 15-year lifecycle

BMW says its range of electric vehicles will have the same life-expectancy as current internal-combustion vehicles, despite some degradation in battery efficiency. Speaking with CarAdvice in Munich this week, BMW head of battery development, Andreas Raith, said talk of longevity issues is not backed up by field data. “It’s not a marketing statement, those batteries are designed to last as long as the vehicle,” Raith said.
