Toyota design chief: ‘We are okay with polarising now’

Toyota’s new design language is finally flourishing on its latest models – including the Camry and Corolla – as the Japanese giant moves further away from its consensus-driven design methodology into a new era of risk-taking. Speaking to Australian media in Sydney last week, Kevin Hunter, president of Toyota's Calty design studios in California and Michigan, said the company is now okay with designing cars that don’t have universal appeal.

Tommi Makinen to lead Toyota Yaris WRC team in 2017

Rally legend Tommi Makinen will lead Toyota Gazoo Racing’s charge into the World Rally Championship (WRC) in 2017, the outfit has confirmed today. Makinen will be joined by Toyota president Akio Toyoda, noted motoring enthusiast and the driving force behind the launch of the 86 sports car, as team chairman. Known best for his time as the pilot of Mitsubishi’s hero Lancer Evolution rally car, Makinen claimed four consecutive championship titles between 1996 and 1999.

Part of the shift in Toyota's attitude will be a new approach to transparency with vehicle issues. The company is reported to be devising new guidelines for disclosing issues with its models in order to increase transparency.
