2017 Range Rover Velar D300 S AWD review

I have owned this vehicle for two and a half years and 45,000km after updating from an Evoque, which had served well in my ownership experience.

I love the driving dynamics of the Velar on the highways and over mountainous terrain, given the bags of torque the V6 is blessed with and the wonderful suspension Range Rover is renowned for. Mine is mildly enhanced with larger wheels which afford a good ride experience, yet the tyres are expensive to replace when needed.

The Black Pack and Piano finish veneer interior with perforated leather seats set a luxury ambience as well, while not being over the top. Apple CarPlay is part of my Technology Pack as well as the blind-spot monitor which I feel is a must. There were a couple of earlier glitches with the technology features, including a freeze of the reverse camera, but that settled down eventually.

I have had a quite dream run, this car giving me a wonderful driving experience that I have never had before, including a very good service regime when required each twelve months.

A useful feature is the activity wrist band which allows you to lock keys and personal belongings in the vehicle, letting you work or go for a swim at the beach without worrying. The Convenience Pack provides toggles to drop back seats from the rear of the vehicle, as well as provides the gesture tailgate to allow opening the boot when you have both hands full of grocery bags. Very nifty from a woman’s point of view.

The vehicle can feel a bit bulky at first, yet with practice it is a very maneuverable vehicle. The transmission is an 8-speed and has the various JLR selectable modes, also offering gear shift paddles for an enhanced driving experience. Having said that, the air suspension does offer a superb ride, but was checked by the dealer just once after it had locked on height control - it was rectified by the dealer easily.

Being a tall person, I am impressed with the space on offer and the cargo area, which is sufficient even with a mini fridge and power point setup. To sum up, the Velar is a beautifully styled vehicle giving me great satisfaction and comfort when driving many hundreds of kilometres in a day with the ease a V6 can do. I cannot ask for more improvements or refinement as I feel the designers hit the mark first up, resulting in the Velar being awarded the World Car Design of the Year title not long after release, which is a testament to Range Rover's manufacturing ingenuity.
