2014 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country Review
My wife bought a White T5 XC in June after 5.5 years of BMW X3 20D ownership. She looked at BMW X1, Audi Q3, Mercedes GLA and the Volvo. Initially fell in love with the looks of the Volvo to be honest. Shortlisted The GLA and Volvo - BMW expensive but cheap feeling, Audi - ugly and expensive.
- Value, Luxury, Technology, Safety Features, Style and Quality
- Some features a little complicated at first., Boot capacityis "tight"
After driving both GLA and Volvo back to back chose Volvo on comfort, equipment and performance. At the time only the diesel GLA was available and it was, frankly, a slug.
Chose T5 over D4 XC mainly due to lower noise levels. A recent road trip from Sydney through Canberra, Eden, Melbourne, Ballarat, Bendigo, Swan Hill, Mildura, Orange and Katoomba for 3 weeks confirmed we made the correct decision.
The car was economical, comfortable, and possesses fabulous performance. We ventured "off-road" onto dirt roads a couple of times which the car handled easily. The car came optioned with the safety pack which proved a real bonus on country roads and freeways. Specifically, the Radar Cruise Control is brilliant.
Driving into Melbourne on the Eastern Freeway proved hassle free by allowing the vehicle to follow the flow of the traffic. Very relaxing and stress free.
Our Volvo dealer at Narrabeen has been simply amazing. Nothing is too much trouble. With modern cars there is so much technology to master it required an extra visit after delivery to follow up on the features that we had discovered but not learnt how to use.
At first some controls were a bit illogical however, familiarity has proven otherwise. My wife loves the ability to change the look of the dash for the various driving modes and I love the amount of information available, even running to graphs for fuel consumption.
Our purchase includes 3 years scheduled servicing, which is a bonus, but do far everything works perfectly. The interior is very comfortable, with multi-adjustable electric seats with 3 memory functions and a proper lumbar support. Real leather rounds off stylish and classy interior. Yes, it is a tight fit, however, we recently comfortably had 4 up going to the football with me driving - I am 193cm tall - without problem.
The 2.5 L motor has more than enough performance and the 6 speed 'box is very smooth. My only minor gripe would be that the cylinder deactivation is not particularly smooth on start up. Apart from that, we could not recommend the vehicle more highly. Both of our previous vehicles were BMW's and the Volvo loses nothing in comparison, and offers plenty more features fro significantly less cost.
