2014 Ssangyong Rexton Sx Review
What a bloody brilliant SUV for the money!
- Super silent diesel engine, Excellent ride on SA's bumpy country roads, Mercedes 5 speed auto works an absolute treat, More than capable of towing small to medium caravans, Very well built
- No reversing cam, yet the NZ model has one as standard....., Only one model on offer and only four colours to choose from
I've had mine since July 14 and have travelled 12,500 km in it (as of Feb 15) It's not missed a beat, the build quality is excellent, that diesel engine is almost silent in operation and it has more than enough grunt to tow my 17 foot caravan.
I find the Mercedes designed 5 speed transmission to be absolutely sublime in operation. The car is always in the right gear at the right time with changes being smooth and fast. The Rex's transmission despite being an older design is light years ahead of the dodgy DSI 6 speed they used to fit to the Kyron / Actyon. I found that unit to be dithery, slow with annoying flare between changes with a total mind of it's own by comparison.
Okay, there are more powerful options out there and the Isuzu MU-X compares in price, but the Rex is a well built and proven design. Ssangoyng have refined the design over the years and the latest is testimony of how 'right' the initial design was.
The new engine is more than capable of propelling the Rex along at a decent pace, out on the open road. Around town, I find I actually better the claimed urban fuel consumption of 9.6 l / 100 km at around 9.3 - 9.5. Combined economy usually comes in at around 8.5 - still really good for a 2 tonne car.
Servicing wise, they are great value again. We also have a three year old korando with the same engine and that so far has proven 100% reliable and quite cheap for a diesel at $350 for a standard service at the local dealer.Service intervals are also very good at 12 months / 15,000 km.
