Chinese cars buck the sales trend, up 36 per cent

Chinese car makers continue to defy the downward trend in Australia’s new-car market, with latest figures from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries showing a 36 per cent increase in the first five months of this year versus the same period in 2019. That’s bucking the current trend where new car sales have taken a hammering thanks to the coronavirus pandemic and the resulting recession.

Great Wall preparing 500Nm diesel engine for new ute

Great Wall hasn't given its new ute a name yet, but it's already preparing a pair of pumped-up engines for power-hungry buyers. The new Pickup, as it’s currently known by Great Wall, will be available with petrol and diesel power, the former making 120kW and 360Nm, the latter offering 145kW and between 380Nm and 400Nm of torque. Both displace 2.0-litres, both are turbocharged. A six-speed manual and eight-speed ZF automatic will be available.

Haval: Next-generation SUV range not due until 2021

Haval is weighing its future SUV plans in Australia, as it prepares for a new wave of right-hand drive product arriving from China in 2021. The current H2, H6 and H9 line-up looks likely to be bolstered by some combination of the F7, coupe-style F7X, and H6 model ranges currently offered in China. Exactly which remains to be seen, as the company works out an approach that’ll help it cut through in Australia’s overcrowded SUV market.
