Bentley considering a third model line?

Bentley's outgoing CEO, Franz-Josef Paefgen, believes that the company that he led for the last nine years may need to expand its product line to stay ahead of the curve.

"A challenge for my successor will be to decide on a third product line," he said in an interview with The Detroit Bureau.

His successor, former board member in charge of R&D at Volkswagen, Wolfgang Durheimer, will take the helm come February 1.

The Volkswagen ultra-luxury manufacturer currently sells the Bentley Continental (starting from $368,134) and Bentley Mulsanne (starting from $695,000) and any additional model, if it was to go ahead, would most likely be based on a modified platform of either existing cars to keep costs down.

The company will also have to work hard to meet new and tougher fuel economy and emissions regulations in Europe and the United States.

Bentley's best year came in 2007 as it sold over 10,000 vehicles worldwide. Since the downturn in the global economy the brand suffered sale figures as low as 4,616 in 2009. Last year saw sales pick up and the company's all new Mulsanne (review here) get a warm reception.
