Mazda Minagi concept for Geneva, potential CX-5 SUV

The first official sketches of the Mazda Minagi Concept have leaked onto the internet ahead of the vehicle’s unveiling at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show in March.

Set to inspire Mazda’s upcoming compact SUV – expected to be called the CX-5 – the Minagi clearly follows Japanese brand’s new ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’ design language, which was first revealed in the Mazda Shinari Concept in August last year.

Little is known about the CX-5, although when it enters production (likely to be in 2012) it will become Mazda’s smallest SUV, around the size of the Kia Sportage.

Late last year our spy photographers captured images of a CX-5 mule undergoing winter testing. That vehicle was dressed to look like a Mazda CX-7 but featured a shorter wheelbase and a more prominent grille – similar to that of the Minagi.

Underpinning the CX-5 will be Mazda’s upcoming range of efficient SkyActiv drivetrains, including the Sky-G petrol engine, Sky-D diesel and Sky-Drive automatic transmission.

Expect more details of the Mazda Minagi Concept to be revealed in the lead-up to the Geneva Show, which opens to the public on March 3.
