BMW Z4 four-cylinder turbo rumours

According to recent reports out of Europe, BMW is apparently working on producing a turbocharged four-cylinder engine to replace the current normally-aspirated six-cylinder models.

With EPA and European emission laws becoming more and more stringent, it could be the right direction for BMW. The current 2.5-litre six cylinder is getting a bit old now and, in all respect, the amount of power and torque it provides (150kW/250Nm) is also a little outdated. Some turbocharged four-cylinder cars achieve similar numbers.

Automobile Magazine in particular seems to have inside information on the matter, and says a 150kW four cylinder is on its way and is expected to enter the market in the US as early the end of 2011. Speculation suggests the new four-cylinder turbocharged engine will offer a sizable reduction in fuel consumption over the current 2.5.

In Australia, the BMW Z4 2.5 currently holds a 9.2L/100km fuel consumption rating. The four-cylinder could offer fuel consumption of 8L/100km or better while still presenting similar power figures. More torque is also likely to be on offer thanks to the turbocharged unit.

It is all just a bit of a rumour at this stage, but we'll be sure to provide more definite details as soon they become available.
