Maserati SUV to be US-built, use Ferrari engines

“The decision has been made,” according to Fiat and Chrysler CEO, Sergio Marchionne. The upcoming Maserati SUV will be built in the US and powered by Ferrari-sourced engines.

Mr Marchionne revealed to reporters at the 2011 North American International Auto Show in Detroit that the all-new vehicle was on track to debut sometime in 2012.

And he promised the Maserati’s Ferrari-designed powerplant would be something special.

“It will be a rock and roll engine,” he said.

Likely options include the 4.2- and 4.7-litre V8 units currently found in the Quattroporte and GranTurismo models, although Mr Marchionne would not rule out the possibility of it being powered by a V12 engine, potentially the 6.0-litre from the 599 GTB.

The new SUV has been approved for production at the Jefferson North assembly plant in Detroit, where it is expected to be built alongside the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Durango and upcoming Jeep Grand Wagoneer – all of which share Chrysler’s WK2 platform.

We can’t wait for the teasers, sketches and spy photos to come.
