Mercedes-Benz EQE, hybrid and electric AMGs confirmed for Munich motor show in September

Mercedes-Benz has confirmed it will showcase as many as five new all-electric production or concept vehicles at the 2021 Munich motor show in September, alongside a slew of plug-in hybrids.

Leading Mercedes-Benz’s Munich line-up will be the new EQE electric sedan, the smaller companion to the flagship EQS, and the Mercedes-EQ sub-brand’s equivalent of the large E-Class.

Few details of the model have been given out, though it’s expected to ride on the same EVA dedicated electric platform as its bigger EQS brother, sharing many of its long-range powertrains, ‘one-bow’ aerodynamic styling and screen-laden MBUX Hyperscreen dashboard design (teased below).

Joining the EQE on the show floor will be Mercedes-AMG’s first electric vehicle in close to a decade, and while its identity isn't named, the vehicle will be a "luxury saloon", of which Mercedes only offers one (excluding the EQE): the flagship EQS.

While you can click here to read everything we know so far about the AMG EQS, highlights of the vehicle are expected to include dual-motor all-wheel drive, a sub-4.0-second 0-100km/h time, 250km/h top speed, 22-inch alloy wheels, adaptive dampers, large performance brakes, and a slew of exterior and interior upgrades.

Mercedes-AMG (though its parent company Daimler) has trademarked EQS 53, EQS 55 and EQS 63 names in Australia – designations familiar among buyers and fans of AMG's petrol-powered cars (even if the origins of the names link to the displacements of combustion engines).

The German manufacturer's high-performance division will also introduce a "performance hybrid" model – slated to be a 600kW/1000Nm plug-in hybrid version of the GT 4-Door Coupe, pairing a twin-turbo petrol V8 with electric propulsion for a sub-3.0-second 0-100km/h time.

A high-performance AMG S63 sedan powered by a detuned version of the V8 hybrid system is also in the works, with spy shots indicating development is nearing completion – though it's thought this model will be unveiled in early 2022 instead.

Other highlights of Mercedes' Munich display will be "a concept vehicle which shows how Mercedes-Maybach will enter the age of electric mobility" – hinted by Mercedes design boss Gorden Wagener earlier this week to preview the Maybach-badged EQS SUV, due in 2024 (below).

There'll also be a new Smart electric SUV concept (teased in sketch form below), plus an armoured version of the S-Class (known as the Guard), and Mercedes-Benz's rival for the Audi A4 Allroad and Volvo V60 Cross Country, the upcoming C-Class All-Terrain.

The 2021 Munich motor show – due to open to media on September 6 – marks the first major European motor show since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic – with the last international show being the predecessor to Munich, the Frankfurt motor show, in September 2019.
