2012 Smart Roadster patent images leaked

Mercedes-Benz and its small car subsidiary Smart has just filed to patent what appears to be the next Smart Roadster variant. Images of the patent application have also just been leaked onto the internet in the last few days.

The Smart Roadster isn't expected to hit the showroom until 2012 but here we get a glimpse of what the little open-top runabout will look like.

From the double-bubble windscreeen to the 'Tridion cell' cabin structure and soft styling of the front end, the model certainly looks much better than the current open top Smart Crossblade. Only problem is, it will apparently go on sale in limited numbers.

It seems to look more desirable than all of the outgoing Smart versions too, featuring softer yet more complete body panel extensions. The front end styling is also much improved over the boring flat face of the current model. The 2012 Smart Roadster should be something to look forward to in any case, and a tasty addition to the supermini car market.

Mercedes-Benz hasn't officially released any details or specifications of the new car but speculators say all will be revealed some time this year at an international motor show. We'll be sure to keep you updated.
