Police bust learner driver doing 223km/h after video is uploaded to social media

An unaccompanied learner driver has been busted driving at 223km/h on a freeway south of Sydney. Police caught up with him after the learner’s mates uploaded the video to social media.

Here’s a community service announcement and a shocking reminder about the imbeciles sharing our roads. They could be in the car next to you. Here’s hoping it’s not this bloke.

NSW Police highway patrol officers this week charged a 20-year-old male learner driver with a number of offences stemming from a video that depicted him travelling at 223km/h on a freeway south of Sydney.

The learner driver was filmed by his mates travelling at more than twice the freeway speed limit in the middle of the night in late April 2021.

His friends uploaded the video to social media, which was spotted by police who then tracked down the alleged offender.

We’ll let the NSW Police take over from here:

“The 20-year-old learner licence holder drove a Holden Commodore in a southerly direction near Menangle at 12am on 22nd April.

“He had a number of other young persons in the vehicle with him at the time who were filming his exploits.

“He drove at various speeds over the speed limit, the highest recorded being 223km/h, or 133km/h over the 90km/h speed limit for a learner driver.”

Above: This is not the driver clocked at 223km/h. This is a stock image from a driver distraction safety campaign.

Police said when they tracked down the driver “he denied the allegations but was quick to begin defending himself once he was shown the recording police had obtained of his actions”.

“The man will appear in court later this month for driving at a speed dangerous to the public, exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h, unaccompanied learner, and fail to disclose the driver’s details to police,” the statement continued.

Meanwhile, not far from where the learner driver was clocked at 223km/h, police this week intercepted a driver (pictured below) trying to leave the Greater Sydney lockdown zone in breach of the current Public Health Order.

“The driver … was stopped for a breath test while travelling south on the Hume Highway past the Bargo exit,” said police.

“The driver, a resident of the Parramatta / Baulkham Hills area refused to produce his driver licence, state his name and home address, or submit to a breath test, all requirements under law.

“He was also found to be breaching Public Health Orders. He was arrested and taken to Camden Police where he was charged. This man will now have to explain his actions to a Magistrate.”

Since the start of Lockdown Two, NSW Police highway patrol officers from metropolitan Sydney have been deployed to the fringes of the Greater Sydney lockdown area to monitor drivers leaving or entering the lockdown zone.
