Genesis confirms three electric vehicles for Australia in 2022; Melbourne showroom opens

Hyundai's luxury brand is planning an electric assault on the Australian market, coinciding with the expansion of its physical showroom and test-drive presence.

Genesis Australia has confirmed plans to launch its first three all-electric vehicles Down Under in the first half of 2022.

The confirmation came as part of an announcement detailing the "opening" of Genesis' second 'Studio' showroom in the Emporium Melbourne shopping centre in Melbourne's CBD, joining the Pitt Street Mall location in Sydney, and slated to be followed by a Brisbane Studio next year,

Genesis didn't go into detail on the identity of the new electric vehicles, though it has been confirmed the first to launch will be the Electrified G80, a large luxury sedan based on the latest-generation, combustion-powered G80.

Unveiled in April 2021, the Electrified G80 pairs two 136kW electric motors with an 87.2kWh lithium-ion battery for combined outputs of 272kW and 700Nm, sent to all four wheels for a 4.9-second 0-100km/h dash. Driving range is rated at 427km according to Korean testing procedures.

Set to follow closely behind the electric G80 is Genesis' first dedicated electric vehicle, expected to be called the GV60, riding on the same E-GMP 'skateboard' electric architecture as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6.

Spy photos in recent months indicate the GV60 will draw visual inspiration from the 2019 Mint concept, with twin-bar LED headlights and tail-lights, flush-fitting retractable door handles, a rising beltline and a prominent rear spoiler.

Inside, two 12.3-inch screens will sit atop the dashboard, joined by a quirky two-spoke steering wheel, swathes of metallic trim, and camera door mirrors.

The final piece in the Genesis electric puzzle is slated to be an electric version of the recently-launched GV70 mid-size SUV, all but confirmed to wear the Electrified GV70 moniker (after the name was trademarked in Australia last month).

Details of the BMW iX3 rival are scarce, however borrowing the 272kW dual-motor powertrain could make it capable of some BMW X3 M40i and Audi SQ5-rivalling performance numbers.

A leaked product roadmap indicates the covers will come off the new Genesis GV60 by the end of 2021, with the Electrified GV70 likely to debut in late 2021 or early 2022.

Genesis opens Melbourne 'Studio' showroom; more test drive centres and Brisbane showroom to follow

Genesis has "opened" its second 'Genesis Studio' showroom, this time in the Emporium Melbourne shopping centre in the heart of Melbourne's CBD.

With an 18-metre floor-to-ceiling white LED backdrop and a dark wood panelled seating area, the Korean brand claims the store "evokes the Korean aesthetic philosophy of the 'Beauty of White Space'".

"The new flagship Melbourne Studio showcases the latest Genesis luxury models in an artistic environment, whilst providing an exceptional customer experience, which is at the core of the Genesis Brand’s philosophy," said Jun Heo, Genesis Motors Australia CEO.

"Like our vehicles, the Studio’s progressive design evokes the distinctly Korean aesthetic philosophy ‘Beauty of White Space’. We cordially welcome all Melbournians to visit the studio and experience our unique luxury perspective for themselves."

The Melbourne location is joined by the first Genesis Studio on Pitt Street Mall in Sydney's CBD, and a Test Drive Centre in Parramatta, in Sydney's west (bottom of story), which recently moved into a new, larger location (formerly occupied by a Ford showroom).

Test Drive Centres will open in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast in the fourth quarter of 2021 (October to December), ahead of a dedicated Brisbane Studio due in 2022.

In addition to the Studios and Test Drive Centres, customers can interact with the Genesis brand online through its all-online purchasing model, and its 'Genesis to You' concierge service that can bring test-drive cars to your house.
