2021 Tesla Model 3 prices hit new low in Australia, now from $59,900 plus on-road costs

Tesla has slashed the prices of its Model 3 sedan – now sourced from China – with savings of between $3000 and $9000 off the most recent RRPs, and more than $17,000 off the highest price from 12 months ago.

Tesla has slashed the cost of its popular Model 3 sedan – by between $3000 and $9000 compared to the most recent round of price cuts.

The Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus now starts from $59,900 plus on-road costs.

It is the cheapest the Tesla Model 3 has been since arriving in Australia two years ago, in July 2019.

The middle-of-the-range Tesla Model 3 Long Range now starts from $73,400 plus on-road costs.

The top of the range Tesla Model 3 Performance is now priced from $84,900 plus on-road costs, which is $17,000 less than its highest RRP set this time last year.

The RRPs listed above do not include Tesla's $1375 delivery fee, $150 ordering fee, or on-road costs such as stamp duty, registration, and compulsory third party insurance.

This means the $59,900 plus-on road costs price for the Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus adds up to between $62,500 and $66,300 drive-away, depending on the state or territory in which the vehicle is registered.

The latest discounts mean two of the three Tesla Model 3 sedans are now priced below the Luxury Car Tax threshold of $79,659, beyond which an extra tax of 33 cents for every dollar is added.

Previously, only one Tesla Model 3 limboed under the Luxury Car Tax threshold.

The price of the Tesla Model 3 range has ebbed and flowed since arriving in Australia two years ago.

Research by CarAdvice shows Tesla initially increased the price of the Model 3 line-up three times in the first 12 months on sale locally.

However, since switching production of Australia-bound Tesla Model 3 cars to China, the electric car start-up has cut prices three times in the past 12 months.

Tesla has not disclosed a reason behind the latest price cut – and it is unclear how long these RRPs will last.

However, if history is a guide – there have been six price changes on the Tesla Model 3 in Australia over the past two years – the current RRPs may not last long.

CarAdvice has listed below the price changes for each variant since the Tesla Model 3 was introduced in Australia in July 2019.

The RRPs listed in the first table do not include Tesla’s dealer delivery fee, ordering fee, or on-road costs.

The costs listed in the second table are the current drive-away prices for the Tesla Model 3 range as shown on the company’s website as this article was published on 11 July 2021. Drive-away prices listed in this story do not include government rebates that might apply in some jurisdictions.

Further, the drive-away prices vary between states and territories as each has their own stamp duty rates.

Care has been taken when compiling this data, but prices are subject to change without notice. Check with Tesla for final details and the cost of options.

The massive price cuts come as Tesla reportedly freighted its biggest ever shipment of cars to Australia last month (pictured below).

Experts estimated close to 1500 Tesla Model 3 sedans – equivalent to almost half a year’s worth of sales in Australia – arrived in ports around the country as part of the shipment.
