2022 Aston Martin Valkyrie breaks down during Goodwood debut

With thousands of fans watching, the AU$4.3 million V12 hypercar came to a grinding halt. Now Aston Martin has explained what happened.

The 2022 Aston Martin Valkyrie hypercar appeared to break down overnight at its debut public event – the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Racing up the historic hill climb on its second run in as many days, the hybrid V12 hypercar came to a grinding halt with English driver Darren Turner behind the wheel.

The cause of the fault was not immediately clear. However, the vehicle was capable of moving slowly under its own power when reversing off the track and into an escape road.

A convertible Jaguar F-Type was following closely behind at the time, however was able to stop without incident.

Red flags were immediately waved, and – once the car had been cleared – the event continued without further interruption.

When operational, the US$3.2 million (AU$4.3 million) Aston Martin Valkyrie derives 865kW/900Nm from its naturally-aspirated 6.5-litre Cosworth V12 engine and single electric motor.

This is sent to the rear wheels via a single-clutch seven-speed automated manual transmission, permitting a claimed 0-100km/h sprint time of just 2.5 seconds and top speed of 402km/h.

After several major delays, CarAdvice understands the first customer deliveries of the Aston Martin Valkyrie have now begun.
