Driver’s near miss with police car released

The New South Wales police has released a video from a highway patrol vehicle's on-board video camera showing a fatigued driver narrowly missing the police vehicle, in what can only be described as startling footage.

The footage shows the driver of a late model Honda veering onto the wrong side of the road, with a potentially fatal accident being avoided by an evasive manoeuvre by the police officer.

If there was any other traffic on the road at the time, it's safe to say the result could have been much worse.

Assistant Commissioner of the New South Wales police force, John Hartley, suggests in the video that fatigue contributes between 20-30% in all fatal road accidents and that it's easy to avoid by stopping, instead of driving while fatigued.

This critical message comes as we move into the new year period where police are likely to catch a number of people who risk their lives and the lives of others on the road by drinking and driving or driving while fatigued.

It's a sobering message and one that should certainly not be taken with a grain of salt.
