LEVC reveals London taxi-inspired hybrid campervan

The e-Camper will go on sale in Europe and the UK later this year, priced from the equivalent of AU$115,000.

The London Electric Vehicle Company – a subsidy of Chinese manufacturer Geely, and best known for its electrified taxis – has taken the covers off a new range-extender hybrid campervan.

Inside the cabin, the 'e–Camper' features an integrated electric kitchen, stow-away table, and sleeping accommodation for four (as the rear seat lays flat for two, while a fold-away double bed is located in the pop-up roof).

Power is sent to the road exclusively via an electric motor mounted to the rear axle. However, a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine can continually top up the 31kWh battery pack (similar to a BMW i3's REX range-extender system).

According to LEVC, this permits a zero-emission range of 98km, and a maximum overall range of 489km when the generator is deployed.

Performance figures are not specified, however the LEVC VN5 commercial van (on which the e-Camper is largely based) climbs from 0-100km/h in a claimed 13.2 seconds, on the way to a top speed of 128km/h. It's likely the e-Camper will be slightly slower, due to its increased weight.

The campervan will go on sale in Europe and the UK in the fourth quarter of this year (October to December inclusive). LEVC has released “indicative pricing” of €73,000 (AU$115,000) and £62,250 (AU$114,000) for both markets respectively.

There is no word yet on whether the vehicle will be offered in Australia. However, the LEVC TX taxi was recently certified for local sale through the Australian government's RVCS database, suggesting a local launch for the brand could be on the cards.
