2022 BMW M3 and M4 price and specs: All-paw Competition xDrive sedan, coupe and convertible added

BMW's hottest mid-size cars gain all-wheel drive, including a new convertible model. They'll be here later this year.

  • 2022 BMW M3 and M4 pricing and specification
  • All-wheel drive variants join local range
  • 0-100km/h times cut to 3.7 seconds or less
  • Priced from $160,900 before on-road costs

Pricing and specifications for all-wheel-drive versions of the 2022 BMW M3 and M4 have been confirmed, ahead of their local arrival in the fourth quarter of 2021 (October to December inclusive).

Joining rear-wheel-drive versions of BMW's new M3 sedan and M4 coupe introduced earlier this year, buyers can now pick from three new all-wheel-drive variants: the M3 Competition Sedan with xDrive, M4 Competition Coupe with xDrive, and the M4 Competition Convertible with xDrive – the latter being the sole variant of the M4 Convertible available globally.

Under the bonnet of all three models is a 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-six petrol engine, sending 375kW and 650Nm to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

It's no regular all-wheel drive system, either, as it's a downsized version of the M xDrive system fitted to the larger M5, offering three modes – 4WD, 4WD Sport and 2WD – that vary whether the front axle is in play, and how much torque to send to it.

BMW claims 3.5-second 0-100km/h sprint times for the M3 Sedan and M4 Coupe, increasing to 3.7 seconds for the M4 Convertible. Top speed is electronically-limited to 250km/h across all models, though an optional M Driver's Package can up that to 290km/h in the sedan and coupe, or 280km/h in the drop-top.

Versus their rear-drive counterparts, all-paw sedans and coupes score a new double-joint spring strut front axle, revised suspension geometry, retuned steering system and upgraded oil system.

Meanwhile, the convertible differentiates itself from its fixed-roof M4 sibling though a soft-top roof – claimed to be 40 per cent lighter than the outgoing car's retractable hard-top – that can raise or lower at speeds up to 50km/h.

Standard equipment across all body styles is shared – a full breakdown is listed at the bottom of this story – aside from the fitment of a carbon-fibre roof on the M3 Sedan and M4 Coupe, and an 'air collar' neck warmer inside the M4 Convertible.

Optional packages on the sedan and coupe include carbon-ceramic brakes ($16,500), an M Carbon exterior design package ($9500) and Lightweight M Carbon bucket seats (which save 9.6kg, for an extra $7500) – with buyers able to combine all three items as part of the M Carbon Package, which costs $26,000.

Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 or Pirelli P Zero Corsa track tyres can be had for an additional $2000, with the exact compound depending on availability. Red or black brake calipers are no-cost options.

Meanwhile, Dravit Grey, Tanzanite Blue and Oxide Grey gloss metallic BMW Individual colours can be optioned for $2500, with an array of 'Frozen' matte-look metallic hues available for an extra $5000.

Option packages for the M4 Convertible are yet to be confirmed.

The 2022 BMW M3 and M4 Competition xDrive models will reach Australian showrooms in the fourth quarter of 2021.
