Porsche's fastest SUV gets even faster, with a new record-setting Turbo GT variant.

  • 2022 Porsche Cayenne pricing and specification
  • Race-inspired Turbo GT gains more power from reworked V8
  • Stiffer chassis and increased aerodynamics under the skin
  • Priced from $336,100 before on-road costs

The 2022 Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT has been revealed.

The first Porsche SUV to wear the hallowed GT badge – though it’s not certain this model has been developed by the same Motorsport team responsible for GT2, GT3 and GT4 road cars – the Cayenne Turbo GT is the hottest iteration of the Cayenne Coupe yet, with more power, sharper handling and extra downforce.

Power comes from a reworked version of the Turbo’s 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, which employs strengthened internals and changes to the turbos, injectors, intercooler, and more to develop 471kW and 850Nm.

That’s an increase of 67kW/80Nm over the ‘standard’ Cayenne Turbo Coupe, but 29kW short of the Turbo S E-Hybrid – though the GT promises to be quicker in the corners, thanks to less weight given the deletion of the plug-in hybrid system.

Drive is sent to all four wheels though an eight-speed automatic transmission, which shifts quicker than the Turbo's unit. The all-wheel-drive system's transfer case also features additional cooling.

Porsche claims a 3.3-second 0-100km/h sprint time, towards a top speed of 300km/h – 0.6 seconds quicker and 14km/h faster than the Turbo respectively.

Under the skin, the Turbo GT sits up to 17mm lower than the Turbo Coupe on which it's based, with the vehicle's three-chamber air suspension system now 15 per cent stiffer, and its damper characteristics retuned.

The active roll stabilisation system and torque vectoring systems have been retuned for improved stability, along with the Power Steering Plus and rear-wheel steering capabilities.

A set of 22-inch alloy wheels – measuring 10.5 inches (267mm) wide up front and 11.5 inches (292mm) at the rear – are wrapped by specially-developed Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres, with 285/35 front and 315/30 rear profiles. There's also an additional 0.45 degrees of negative camber up front.

To help bring it all to a halt, 440mm front and 410mm rear brake discs are fitted to the new Turbo GT.

Joining a revised chassis are an array of aerodynamic improvements, including GT-specific carbon-fibre end plates for the roof-mounted spoiler, and a Gurney flap on the active rear spoiler that is 25mm larger than that of the Turbo, increasing downforce by up to 40kg at the car's top speed.

The result of Porsche's dynamic changes? A seven-minute, 38.9-second lap around the 20.832km layout of the Nurburgring Nordschleife – a record for an SUV.

On the styling front, changes specific to the Turbo GT include a unique front bumper with enlarged intakes and a lower lip spoiler, 'double bubble' carbon-fibre roof, black wheel-arch extensions, 22-inch GT Design wheels, and a unique carbon rear diffuser.

The rear diffuser is home to dual central exhaust tips, which connect to a sports exhaust system that uses a titanium rear silencer (and deletes the centre silencer) to save weight.

Inside, front passengers sit in eight-way adjustable sport seats, while the two rear occupants score individual 'sport' seats – with all pews trimmed in a mix of leather and Alcantara, with Neodyme or Arctic Grey accents, and 'turbo GT' lettering on the headrests.

Alcantara adorns other elements in the interior, while the steering wheel gains a yellow 12 o'clock marker. A large infotainment touchscreen running Porsche's latest software sits between the passengers, with wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto.

Standard equipment on Australian models will include Comfort Access, privacy glass, lane-change assist, front and rear parking sensors, a 360-degree camera, a head-up display, adaptive cruise control with emergency assist, rear side airbags, four-zone climate control, ambient lighting, digital radio, and a 20-inch 'collapsible' spare wheel.

The 2022 Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT will reach the first customers' driveways in the fourth quarter of 2021 (October to December inclusive).
