Tesla opens Supercharging services to rival car brands in Norway, no plans for Australian expansion

The presently-exclusive recharging system will be opened up to all electric vehicles at a Norwegian site next year, in a bid for local tax exemptions.

In an unprecedented move for Tesla, the electric vehicle specialist will open its Supercharger stalls to all makes of electric vehicles at a Norwegian site in 2022.

As first reported by Electrek.com, officials from the northern county of Vestland were informed earlier this week the US-based manufacturer would expand access to its presently-exclusive system in a bid to qualify for regional tax incentives.

The same report noted Tesla was in discussions with German authorities regarding similar plans, and suggested any move to update Supercharger policy would likely be rolled out at least Europe-wide.

However, Drive understands the decision is wholly localised for now – there are no immediate plans to expand access outside of Norway, and Supercharging will remain a Tesla-exclusive service in Australia for the immediate future.

Tesla opened its first Supercharger to the public in 2012, and now operates more than 2700 stations with approximately 25,000 stalls in 100 countries. There are currently more than 40 operating sites in Australia, with a further 21 under development.

The price of Supercharging Down Under had discreetly risen from $0.42 to $0.52 per kWh. However, the high-speed service remains approximately 40 per cent cheaper than equivalent petrol.
