Huge Phillip Island Classic planned for March

The Phillip Island Classic is already the largest annual historic motoring event in the Southern Hemisphere, but this year all the stops have been pulled out to ensure that prestigious title is not lost.

Capped at 550 entrants, the Classic covers eight decades of motor racing history up until the late 1980s. The three day, thirty three event program will this year be based on the theme of Australian Legends.

Among the long list of famous racers to attend this year's Classic are memorable Aussie motorsport personalities including Sir Jack Brabham, John Bowe (pictured), Frank Matich, Norm Beechey, Bob Jane, Kevin Bartlett, Jim Richards and Alan Hamilton to name but a few.

Vehicles from Australia and overseas to compete over the long weekend include such marques as Ascort, Buchanan, Buckle, Bugatti, Elfin, Matich, Maybach, Mercedes-Benz, Nota, Lightburn, Goggomobil, Porsche and of course the Repco-Brabham BT14 Formula 2, famously campaigned by Bib Stilwell and John Harvey.

From the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, Germany, the famous 1100HP Porsche 917/30Can-Am winner will appear along side a race prepared Mercedes-Benz 300SL (Gullwing) which will be driven by 1983 Le Mans winner Vern Schuppan.

The event takes place at the Phillip Island Circuit, Victoria from Friday March 7 to Sunday March 9 with further information available through the VHRR or Shannons.
