2021 Porsche 911 GT2 RS with Manthey Performance Kit breaks Nürburgring production-car record
The 20.832km winding circuit was lapped at an average speed of 185.87km/h.
The 2021 Porsche 911 GT2 RS with Manthey Performance Kit has broken the Nürburgring production car lap record, with a time of six minutes and 43.30 seconds around the 20.832km layout of the circuit.
The time was set by German development driver Lars Kern, on ultra-sticky (but road-legal) Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tyres.
Key to the time was the optional, factory-approved Manthey Performance Kit fitted to the track-focused two-door sports car – developed in collaboration between Porsche and tuner Manthey Racing – which increases downforce, chassis rigidity, and stopping power.
The road temperature was recorded at 41 degrees Celsius.
Drive in the Porsche 911 GT2 RS comes from a rear-mounted twin-turbo 3.8-litre six-cylinder petrol engine, sending 515kW/750Nm to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
That’s enough to conquer the 0-100km/h benchmark sprint in a claimed 2.6 seconds, on the way to a top speed of 339km/h (although Porsche has habitually understated its performance specifications in the past).
The Porsche 911 GT2 RS also currently holds the production car lap record at Mount Panorama in Bathurst, with a time of 2 minutes and 14.24 seconds.
The Nurburgring production vehicle lap record – which has become a highly-competitive undertaking for performance car manufacturers in recent years – was previously held by the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series, which circled the 20.832km layout of the 'Ring in six minutes and 48.047 seconds.
Around the 20.6km layout, the GT Black Series posted a six-minute, 43.616-second lap – still slower than the Manthey-tuned Porsche. The AMG's lap was set in November 2020, with GT3 racing driver Maro Engel behind the wheel.
It's also worth noting a different Manthey-tuned GT2 RS 'MR' posted a six-minute, 40.6-second lap around the 20.6km version of the circuit in 2018 – though its lap wasn't counted on the production car leaderboard as the 2018 car's upgrades were offered independently through Manthey, rather than Porsche itself.
Meanwhile, the outright lap record at the Nurburgring is currently help by the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo (a modified example of Porsche's 2017 LMP1 Le Mans car), which completed the circuit in just five minutes and 19.546 seconds.
