  • Two variants of new performance SUV for Australia
  • 206kW 2.0-litre turbo-four, eight-speed auto as standard
  • Priced from $47,500 before on-road costs

Pricing and specifications for the 2021 Hyundai Kona N have been confirmed, ahead of the small performance SUV's Australian arrival around September 2021.

Two specification grades will be offered of Hyundai's first performance SUV: the entry-level Kona N (priced from $47,500 before on-road costs), and the flagship Kona N Premium (priced from $50,500 before on-road costs) – both equipped with automatic transmissions as standard.

Those prices put the Kona N small SUV on par with, or cheaper than, the equivalent i30 N hatch, which is priced from an identical $47,500 before on-roads in base automatic form, or $52,000 before on-road costs in flagship Premium with Sunroof guise (as the Kona N Premium features a sunroof as standard).

Powering the Kona N is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, sending 206kW and 392Nm to the front wheels in normal driving, with the former increasing to 213kW during 20-second 'N Grin Shift' periods of overboost.

An eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is standard – with the i30 N's six-speed manual not available – enabling a 5.5-second sprint from zero to 100km/h (one-tenth slower than the i30) towards a top speed of 240km/h.

Standard performance features include adaptive dampers, an electronically-controlled limited-slip front differential, 19-inch alloy wheels, Pirelli P Zero HN sports tyres, a variable sports exhaust, configurable N drive modes, performance brakes, the N Performance Driving Data System, Launch Control, and rev-matching within the transmission's programming.

There's also a full N exterior body kit, including a rear spoiler.

Opening the range is the aforementioned Kona N (no badge), priced from $47,500 before on-road costs with the only transmission on offer, an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Standard equipment includes a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, satellite navigation and DAB+ digital radio, reversing camera, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, auto LED headlights and tail-lights, single-zone climate control, keyless (proximity) entry, push-button start, and rear parking sensors.

There's also a pair of cloth front sports seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, alloy pedals, wireless phone charging, an eight-speaker Harman Kardon premium sound system, power-folding side mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, acoustic laminated windscreen, rear privacy glass, and a space-saver spare wheel.

Standard active safety features include autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, lane-following assist, driver attention monitoring, auto high-beam, safe exit warning, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert – the latter pair capable of detecting and braking for obstacles.

Sitting atop the range is the Kona N Premium, priced from $50,500 before on-road costs – $1500 less than the equivalent i30 N Premium with Sunroof hatch.

Over the base Kona N, the Premium adds suede and leather interior trim, electrically-adjustable front seats with heating and ventilation, a heated steering wheel, front parking sensors, ambient cabin lighting, a head-up display, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and a glass sunroof.

Atlas White, Ignite Flame (red) and Performance Blue exterior colours are bundled in as standard, with Cyber Grey, Dark Knight (dark grey) and Phantom Black available for an additional $595.

Galaxy Gold matte paint can be had for an extra $1000. Interestingly, the Sonic Blue finish seen on the Kona N at its unveiling earlier this year isn't available in Australia.

A five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty is standard, including coverage for non-competition race track environments.

The 2021 Hyundai Kona N will go on sale in Australia in the third quarter of 2021 (July to September inclusive), with CarAdvice understanding a launch will occur in September.
