The 2022 Maserati GranTurismo has been teased for the first time, ahead of its rumoured unveiling by the end of 2021 in petrol guise, followed by an electric version in 2022.

A set of "spy shots" officially released by Maserati show the new GranTurismo testing on the roads around the brand's Modena headquarters, using a layer of stylised camouflage to hide a two-door body that stays true to the proportions of its predecessor.

Design cues have been borrowed from the newer MC20 supercar, namely the vertical headlights and flush-fitting door handles. We've yet to see an image of the new sports car's rear-end, though expect slim LED tail-lights similar to the new MC20 and upcoming Grecale mid-size SUV.

Despite an evolutionary exterior, the new GranTurismo will be the first Maserati model to offer a fully-electric powertrain when it launches in EV guise in 2022, slated to wear the Folgore name (Italian for 'lightning') – beating the electric version of the MC20 supercar to market, due later in 2022.

Performance, range and charging details remain thin on the ground, though all high-performance electric Maserati models have previously been confirmed to offer three electric motors, all-wheel drive and 800-volt electrical systems enabling circa-300kW DC fast charging.

Maserati has proposed the MC20 Folgore will be capable of a 2.8-second 0-100km/h sprint time, a 310km/h top speed and a WLTP-certified range of 325km – though exactly how those will translate to the new GranTurismo Folgore isn't clear.

A version of the MC20's 3.0-litre twin-turbo 'Nettuno' V6 is also expected to feature in the GranTurismo for buyers still keen on petrol power, though it's likely outputs will be detuned from the supercar's 463kW and 730Nm.

As the first all-new GranTurismo in 14 years, the electrified powertrain will likely be joined by a roster of active safety and connectivity technologies new for the nameplate, from twin 10-inch screens inside the cabin (shared with the MC20), to Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capabilities on freeways.

The 2022 Maserati GranTurismo will be unveiled in petrol-powered form in 2021, followed by an electric variant in 2022.

A sister GranCabrio convertible is slated to follow in petrol and electric guises in 2022.

Both vehicles will be engineered at the brand's headquarters in Modena, Italy, and produced in Turin.

They'll be the first in a series of new electric Maserati models, with the upcoming Grecale and new MC20 supercar's zero-emissions variants due in 2022, followed by all-electric versions of the next-generation Quattroporte sedan and Levante SUV in 2023.
