2022 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe: GT43 and GT53 break cover, not for Australia

AMG's third standalone model scores mild design revisions and reworked suspension for 2022, though the six-cylinder versions aren't bound for Australia.

The facelifted 2022 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe has been revealed.

While today’s debut applies only to six-cylinder GT43 and GT53 variants – the former of which was has never been sold in Australia, while the latter was discontinued locally in 2020 – they provide a hint at what to expect from the updated version of the flagship GT63 S, the only version of Mercedes-AMG’s flagship four-door still offered in Australia.

No changes have been made to the GT43 and GT53’s exterior styling, though new 20- or 21-inch alloy wheel designs are available, while red brake calipers can now be ordered on the six-cylinder models.

Three new exterior colours are available – Spectral Blue Metallic, Spectral Blue Magno (matte), and Cashmere White Magno – while a new AMG Night Package II colours the rear tailgate and front quarter badging in black, and the front grille slats in dark chrome.

Inside, drivers now grip a new flat-bottomed AMG Performance steering wheel, trimmed in a choice of nappa leather only or nappa leather and Dinamica microfibre, and featuring two drive mode selector dials and touch-sensitive buttons on each spoke.

The aluminium shift paddles behind the steering wheel have been enlarged and repositioned

The range of available trim choices has been expanded, with buyers now able to select from new 'exclusive' nappa leather colours (Sienna Brown, Classic Red, Yacht Blue, Deep White and Neva Grey) and a new anthracite open-pore wood inlay option.

European buyers will be offered a limited-run 'Edition' variant, which adds Rubellite Red exterior paint, high-gloss chrome exterior trim, silver 21-inch forged AMG alloy wheels, Neva Grey nappa leather trim, a black/grey steering wheel, grey ash open-pore wood trim, illuminated sill plates, AMG Edition interior badging, and an available panoramic sunroof.

The updated Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe makes its debut first in six-cylinder GT43 and GT53 guises, with the V8-powered GT63 and GT63 S to be unveiled at a later date.

Mechanical changes are limited to a reworked AMG Ride Control+ air suspension system, which gains pressure limiting valves to allow for more precise adjustment of the damping force, and greater differentiation between drive modes.

Under the bonnet, the GT43 continues on with its 3.0-litre non-hybrid turbocharged inline-six engine, sending 270kW and 500Nm to the rear or all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Meanwhile, the GT53 continues to feature an uprated 320kW/520Nm version of the 43's 3.0-litre turbo inline-six, adding 16kW/250Nm of 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance under hard acceleration that's sent to all four wheels as standard through a nine-speed automatic gearbox.

While details of the V8-powered duo have yet to be confirmed, expect no changes to the GT63 S's 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, which sends 470kW and 900Nm to all four wheels through a carry-over nine-speed auto.

The range will soon be joined by 'E-Performance' plug-in hybrid model – expected to wear the GT73 moniker – developing over 600kW and 1000Nm from an electrified twin-turbo V8, enabling a sub-3.0-second 0-100km/h sprint time.

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe will go on sale in Europe in August.

While the six-cylinder GT43 and GT53 won't come to Australia – with a Mercedes-Benz Australia spokesperson confirming the brand has "nothing to announce at this stage" regarding an Australian return – expect the V8-powered GT63 S to arrive locally late in 2021 or early in 2022, depending on when it is revealed.
