BMW recalls nine 2019-20 models with brake booster fault

The vehicles feature faulty hydraulic brake boosters that could cause failures of the ABS and power braking assistance systems, according to the manufacturer.

BMW Australia has recalled 49 examples of an array of its Model Year 2019-20 mid-size and large coupes, convertibles, sedans and SUVs over a fault with the vehicles' hydraulic brake boosters.

The models affected span across BMW M8 Coupe (F92-series), M8 Gran Coupe (F93), X5 (G05), X5 M (F95), X6 (G06), X7 (G07), 7 Series short-wheelbase (G11), 8 Series Coupe (G15), 8 Series Convertible (G14), M3 (G80) and M4 (G82) lines – a total of nine models, including performance variants (X5 vs X5 M), but excluding different body styles (Coupe vs Gran Coupe).

All 49 affected vehicles are stamped Model Year 2019 or 2020, and were available for sale between 27 July 2019 and 23 November 2020.

According to the recall notice lodged with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). "due to a manufacturing fault in the hydraulic unit brake booster, panic braking could cause loss of brake power assistance and the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) without prior warning.

"Although the electronic brake force distribution function is maintained, the loss of the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) may result in reduced braking performance," the notice continues.

"The reduction in breaking performance could increase the risk of an accident and injury to vehicle occupants or other road users. In the event of a serious accident, this may result in death."

A full list of all affected vehicle identification numbers can be found here.

BMW Australia advises owners to contact an "authorised BMW Service partner" to arrange an inspection and subsequent repair, or call the BMW Group Customer Interaction Centre on 1800 813 299. The brand will also directly contact all affected owners.

Customers can also contact BMW Group Australia through its website, where they can enter their vehicle's VIN or chassis number into the BMW Recall search tool to identify any outstanding recalls or Technical Actions.
