Ferrari appoints tech mogul Benedetto Vigna as CEO, looks to restructure for “exciting era ahead”

Mr Vigna will lead one of the world's most prestigious supercar manufacturers from September this year.

Italian automotive icon Ferrari has appointed tech mogul Benedetto Vigna to the role of Chief Executive Officer,  as it looks to restructure for the "exciting era ahead."

The 52-year-old is currently serving as President of French-Italian semiconductor manufacturer STMicroelectronics, and is set to step into the top job at Maranello on 1 September 2021.

He replaces tobacco executive Louis Camilleri, who retired in late 2020 citing “personal reasons.” Media reports out of Europe at the time suggested Mr Camilleri was recovering from serious Coronavirus complications.

John Elkann, Chairman of Ferrari and interim CEO, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Benedetto Vigna as our new Ferrari CEO.

“His deep understanding of the technologies driving much of the change in our industry, and his proven innovation, business-building and leadership skills, will further strengthen Ferrari and its unique story of passion and performance, in the exciting era ahead.”

Benedetto Vigna said: “It’s a special honour to be joining Ferrari as its CEO and I do so with an equal sense of excitement and responsibility. Excitement at the great opportunities that are there to be captured.

"[I feel a] profound sense of responsibility towards the extraordinary achievements and capabilities of the men and women of Ferrari, to all the company’s stakeholders and to everyone around the world for whom Ferrari is such a unique passion.”

Ferrari has largely shunned the move to electrification, however earlier this year confirmed a zero-emission model for launch in 2025. This will follow the Ferrari Purosangue SUV (set to come onto the market in 2022), signally a significant transition for the marque.
