2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe officially revealed, Australian launch due late 2021

BMW's final 4 Series family member goes official, with sleek but divisive styling and a choice of three petrol engines.

The 2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe has been unveiled, ahead of an Australian launch in the fourth quarter of 2021 (October to December inclusive).

The final member of the new-generation 4 Series family to break cover, the 'G26' 4 Series Gran Coupe is the petrol- and diesel-powered sibling to the all-electric i4 unveiled by BMW last week.

Riding on the same CLAR architecture as the 3 Series, 4 Series and nearly all of BMW's current portfolio, the 4 Series Gran Coupe measures 4783mm long, 1852mm wide and 1442mm high, sitting on a 2856mm wheelbase – 143mm longer overall, 27mm wider, 53mm higher and 46mm longer in wheelbase than the car it replaces.

Track widths have increased by 50mm up front and 29mm at the rear to 1595mm and 1623mm respectively, aiding handling and mid-corner stability. Some 470 litres of boot space can be found behind the rear seats, increasing to 1290 litres with the 40:20:40 second row folded.

While buyers in Europe will have a range of four- and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, Australian Gran Coupe buyers will be able to choose from the same three petrol engines offered by the four-door's 4 Series Coupe and Convertible siblings.

Opening the range is a 135kW/300Nm 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder in the 420i, sitting below an uprated 190kW/400Nm 2.0-litre four-pot in the 430i – the latter a 10kW jump over European 430i models, believed to be detuned as a result of stringent emissions regulations.

The 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six-powered M440i xDrive sits atop the global line-up, with Australian models developing 285kW and 500Nm, versus the 275kW/500Nm, 48-volt mild-hybrid version of the engine sold in Europe.

All engines are paired to eight-speed 'Steptronic Sport' automatic transmissions with paddle shifters, sending drive to the rear wheels in the 420i and 430i, or all-wheel drive in the M440i xDrive.

Aiding driving dynamics is a near-50:50 weight distribution, plus uniquely-tuned independent front and rear suspension, variable sports steering and 19-inch alloy wheels.

'Lift-related' dampers are standard on 420i variants, with the 430i and M440i upgrading to adaptive M dampers and M Sport performance brakes.

On the styling front, the 4 Series Gran Coupe shares nearly all of its sheetmetal with the electric i4, from its tall (and divisive) front kidney grilles, five-door liftback shape, smooth surfacing, frameless windows and flush-fitting door handles.

M Sport versions (standard in Australia) gain unique front and rear styling over entry-level European cars, while the flagship M440i gains dual trapezoidal exhaust tips and copper accents. An M Carbon package is available as an option, along with numerous M Performance Parts.

LED headlights and tail-lights will be standard across the range, with adaptive LED or laser headlights available as options.

Inside, a 10.25-inch iDrive 7 infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, over-the-air software updates and gesture control is standard, while a 12.3-inch configurable digital instrument cluster and a sport leather steering wheel sit in front of the driver.

Front passengers are treated to sports seats as standard, along with centenaries console knee pads, a model-specific gear selector, an electric parking brake and BMW's traditional iDrive rotary controller.

Other available features in Europe include front seat heating and ventilation, Vernasca or BMW Individual leather trim, a glass sunroof, ambient lighting, and a Harman Kardon premium sound system.

Up to 40 driver assistance systems are on offer in the new 4 Series Gran Coupe, with standard features including autonomous emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, semi-automated parking, Reversing Assistant, and more.

Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-centring assist, and a 360-degree camera are available in Europe, but it's not clear whether they're standard-fit in Australia.

The 2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe will go on sale in Australia in the fourth quarter of 2021 (October to December inclusive), ahead of the electric i4's arrival early next year.

Pricing and specifications will be announced closer to launch.
