2024 Suzuki Jimny Hybrid in development – report

The small four-wheel drive is expected to receive an electrified powertrain, according to leaked information from Europe.

The 2024 Suzuki Jimny Hybrid is on the way, as the Japanese car maker moves towards an electrified, low-emissions model range.

Future plans revealed by Austrian publication Die Motorprofis show the entire Suzuki line-up will move to electrification in order to meet strict emissions laws in Europe.

The Jimny was pulled from sale in Europe in mid-2020 due to ever-tightening emissions regulations, though the model is set to make a return to the continent after undergoing a makeover as a commercial panel-van.

While full details of the company's product plans have yet to be uncovered, rumours suggest the popular Jimny will gain an electric motor to assist the 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine currently fitted to the small four-wheel drive.

In overseas markets, Suzuki offers 48-volt mild-hybrid variants of its Swift Sport, S-Cross, and Vitara, and it's expected the Jimny will borrow the same basic set-up.

Unlike conventional hybrids (like the Toyota Prius) or plug-in hybrids (like the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV) which have the ability to run purely on electric power, mild hybrids only provide extra assistance to the combustion engine.

Suzuki Australia General Manager Michael Pachota told Drive the company would be interested in offering a hybrid Jimny if the model did eventuate.

Suzuki's local arm has struggled to keep up with demand for the Jimny, with some buyers having to wait as long as 12 months to get their hands on the model. However, Mr Pachota says that may be about to change.

"The demand is growing for the current offering in Australia and we’re pushing hard with the factory to get more units to Australia," he told Drive.

Spies recently caught a camouflaged long-wheelbase version of the vehicle undergoing testing in Europe, while rumours of a five-door, turbocharged Jimny have persisted.

It's expected the Suzuki Jimny Hybrid will arrive in 2024, when the model receives its first major facelift.
