2022 BMW X3 M and X4 M Competition facelifts unveiled, Australian launches due late 2021 – UPDATE

Updated performance SUVs break cover, with a torque bump to match the new M3 and M4 Competitions and revised styling inside and out.

UPDATE, 9 June 2021, 11am: BMW Australia has confirmed the updated 2022 BMW X3 M Competition and X4 M Competition will go on sale in Australia in the fourth quarter of 2021 (October to December inclusive).

Local pricing and specifications will be announced closer to launch. Our original story continues below.

9 June 2021, 10:20am: The facelifted 2022 BMW X3 M Competition and X4 M Competition performance SUVs have been unveiled.

Despite only recently celebrating their second birthdays, BMW's mid-size X3 and X4-based performance SUVs have joined their regular counterparts for a mid-life facelift, bringing new looks, a revised interior and, as rumoured by many, more punch to match their low-riding M3 and M4 siblings.

Under the bonnet sits the same 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline-six petrol engine as the models they replace, though torque jumps by 50Nm for total outputs of 375kW and 650Nm – matching the related M3 and M4 Competition models.

Drive continues to be sent to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission and a variable M xDrive all-wheel drive system, enabling a 3.8-second sprint from zero to 100km/h – down 0.3 seconds over the outgoing models.

BMW claims an electronically-limited top speed of 250km/h as standard, with the limiter bumped up to 285km/h with the M Driver's Package fitted.

Interestingly, BMW's press materials make no mention of the 'base' 353kW/600Nm X3 M and X4 M models previously offered overseas, suggesting they have been axed – though such a move won't affect Australian buyers, as those variants were never offered locally.

The 3.0-litre 'S58' engine benefits from a number of internal tweaks for 2022, including a lightweight forged crankshaft from the M3 and M4, joining track-capable cooling and oil systems carried over from the pre-facelift cars.

21-inch alloy wheels (with 255/40 front and 265/40 rear tyres) are standard-fit in Europe – now available in a new 892M forged design, saving 2kg per corner – hiding high-performance four-piston front and single-piston rear M Compound brakes with blue, black or red calipers.

Adaptive dampers are fitted as standard, with variable steering and an active M rear differential also available overseas.

Mirroring the regular X3 and X4, the hi-po M models have undergone a styling update as part of their facelifts, with new front and rear aprons, more angular conjoined kidney grilles, 10mm-slimmer headlights with new daytime-running light signatures, and 3D-effect LED tail-light signatures.

LED headlights are standard-fit – with matrix LED or laser units available as an option, the latter offering a range of up to 650 metres – while a range of new paint colours are available, including M Marina Bay Blue metallic, M Sao Paulo Yellow, and a selection of BMW Individual finishes.

Inside, the X3 M and X4 M benefit from the same 4 Series-derived centre console as their standard counterparts, featuring the 'control island' central panel from the M3 and M4, comprising the gear selector, start/stop button, drive mode selector and more.

A 12.3-inch centre touchscreen running BMW's iDrive 7 operating system offers Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, BMW Maps satellite navigation, over-the-air updates and more, hooked up to a standard-fit Harman Kardon premium sound system.

A second 12.3-inch digital display sits in front of the driver, now featuring the M-specific instrument views debuted on the flagship M8 super-coupe. The optional head-up display also incorporates its own M-specific displays.

M sports seats with power-adjustable headrests and illuminated M logos are included as standard, trimmed in extended Merino leather upholstery available in a selection of colours.

Drivers grip an M leather-wrapped steering wheel with M tri-colour contrast stitching, while a selection of new trim and inlay choices feature around the cabin.

Driver assistance features have seen an upgrade, with the addition of BMW's semi-autonomous Driving Assistant Professional package, allowing the performance SUV duo to accelerate, brake and steer themselves within their lane in traffic or on the freeway without the driver's hands on the steering wheel (but their eyes on the road).

They're joined by intersection support for the autonomous emergency braking system, improved adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist system, and the addition of BMW's Reversing Assistant feature to the Parking Assistant Plus package.

The 2022 BMW X3 M Competition and X4 M Competition will go on sale in Europe in August 2021.

An Australian launch will occur in the fourth quarter of 2021 (October to December inclusive). Local pricing and specifications will be announced closer to launch.
