MG sales surge … and not just in Australia

The spiritual home of China's MG is embracing the once-proud British brand.

It’s not just Australia that’s embracing MG Motor, with the once-British, now Chinese-owned brand, enjoying a growth spurt in its spiritual homeland.

MG Motor has sold 10,760 cars in the UK so far this year, representing 89.2 per cent growth year-to-date.

May alone accounted for 2453 new registrations, giving the brand a 1.57 per cent market share. According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), Britons bought 141,600 new vehicles in May as the country continues to rebound from extended Covid lockdowns.

Driving the sales boom is MG Motor’s fleet of electrified vehicles, which accounted for 31.7 per cent of total MG sales so far in 2021. MG Motor currently offers three electrified models in the UK – the all-electric MG ZS EV and MG5 EV as well as the MG HS Plug-in hybrid. That’s favourable compared to the rest of the British new car market where sales of electrified vehicles account for just 7.5 per cent across all brands.

In Australia, MG Motor has outsold its British counterparts, recording 15,241 sales so far this year (up 246.9 per cent year-on-year) with May alone accounting for 3506 sales. At the same time last year, MG had sold a total of 4394 cars and SUVs.

Driving that growth in Australia are the MG ZS small SUV (7020 sales so far in 2021) and MG3 hatchback (5754 sales). Bringing up the tail is the brand’s medium-sized SUV, the MG HS, which has recorded 2467 sales so far in 2021, up 208 per cent year-on-year.

While Australians are familiar with the MG ZS and MG HS, the MG5 EV represents an enticing prospect for lovers of stations wagons. The MG5’s all-electric powertrain offers around 344km of claimed range and can, according to the brand, be charged to 80 per cent in 50 minutes using a 50kW charger. It’s priced from £25,095 (about AUD$46,000) after the UK’s £2500 electric vehicle rebate.

A spokesperson for MG Motor Australia told CarAdvice that while the MG5 EV (pictured below) is “on the table” locally, however it’s “unlikely” to make its way Down Under as the company continues on its SUV-led direction.
