Mercedes-Benz EQG: Upcoming electric off-roader imagined

Here's what the electric interpretation of Mercedes-Benz's iconic off-roader could look like.

The iconic Mercedes-Benz G-Class off-road four-wheel drive will go electric in the coming years, likely wearing the Mercedes-Benz EQG moniker – but what might it look like?

These renderings from Instagram user @sugardesign_1 – believed to be an official Alfa Romeo designer, working on the facelifted Giulia sedan due in 2022 – attempt to imagine the new EQG, combining cues from Mercedes-Benz's EQ models with the petrol-powered G-Class's legendary shape.

Up front, a rectangular black panel with an EQS-inspired star pattern and the off-roader's signature circular headlights replaces the G-Class's open grille, with faux intake detailing from the EQS AMG Line limo sitting below, on either side of the licence plate.

At the rear, full-width LED tail-lights from the Concept EQT people-mover stretch across the barn-door tailgate, even running through the spare wheel cover, which features the same star design motif as the faux front grille.

More aerodynamic alloy wheels now fill the arches, while the entire vehicle is clothed in a two-tone paint scheme reminiscent of the new EQS, along with Mercedes-Maybach models.

Set to arrive within "a few years", the launch of an all-electric G-Class was confirmed by Daimler chairman Ola Källenius in early 2020 – with trademark filings in recent months for 'EQG 560' and 'EQG 580' providing a hint at the circa-400kW, dual-motor, all-wheel-drive powertrains we could expect from the new model.

"Yes, the G is going to go electric, we have kicked off the concept work for this, so in a few years you’ll be able to go electric with the G as well," said Källenius.

More details of how the Mercedes-Benz EQG will look – and what will drive it – will come to light over the coming months and years.
