2022 Audi S3: Australian details revealed early, local launch due late 2021

Dealer information reveals Audi's new-generation S3 will offer plentiful standard kit and more power when it reaches Australia late in 2021.

The 2022 Audi S3 is due to go on sale in Australia in late 2021 with one highly-specified variant, a handful of options and a fully-featured 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, CarAdvice can reveal – though questions still remain over how much it will cost.

Preliminary details given to Audi dealers (and communicated to CarAdvice) show the new-generation S3 hatch and sedan will go on sale in Australia in the fourth quarter of 2021 (October to December inclusive) – a refinement of the second-half 2021 date confirmed by Audi Australia – in a sole choice of variant, available with a Premium Plus option pack and numerous standalone options.

CarAdvice understands dealers have begun taking orders for both body styles.

Pricing has yet to be locked in – with an official announcement unlikely for another two to three months – however estimates given to dealers point to a $70,000 before on-road costs list price for the S3 Sportback hatch before options, increasing to $73,000 before on-roads for the S3 sedan.

Option an S3 hatch with the Premium Plus pack and an assortment of other extras, and buyers could expect to pay upwards of $85,000 drive-away.

If true, those figures represent increases of over $7000 over the outgoing, third-generation S3 – though the new model counteracts its price increase with additional standard equipment, newer exterior and interior styling and, crucially, a more powerful engine tune matching that offered in Europe.

Standard equipment is set to include 19-inch Audi Sport alloy wheels, matrix LED headlights, adaptive dampers, a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and digital radio, 12.3-inch configurable digital instrument cluster, power-adjustable sports seats with four-way driver's lumbar (and likely heating), and nappa leather upholstery.

There's also multi-colour ambient interior lighting, dual-zone climate control, a 15-speaker Bang & Olufsen 3D sound system, dark aluminium interior inlays, parking sensors, and metallic paint.

A full suite of active safety systems will be standard-fit, including autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection and support for intersections, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-following assist, lane-keep assist (with lane-departure warning), blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, safe exit warning, and semi-autonomous parking.

The adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist systems combine to form a more advanced Adaptive Cruise Assist function, which accelerates, brakes and centres the S3 within its lane on freeways at up to 210km/h.

Powering all S3 models in Australia is a reworked 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, now developing 228kW and 400Nm – up 15kW and 20Nm over the outgoing S3 in Australia, which was slightly detuned compared to 221kW examples sold in Europe.

Drive is sent to all four wheels exclusively through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and a front-biased Quattro all-wheel drive system, enabling a 4.8-second claimed sprint from 0-100km/h, and a 250km/h electronically-limited top speed.

S3 buyers will have the option of a $3990 Premium Plus package, dealer documents report, which adds a panoramic sunroof, head-up display, 360-degree camera, and memory functionality for the driver's seat and side mirrors.

A slew of standalone options will also be available, including the aforementioned sunroof for $2600, a different 19-inch alloy wheel design for $300, a black exterior trim pack for $1500, roof rails for $750, Audi Exclusive paint for $3800, and a hands-free power tailgate for the hatchback (likely costing around $2000).

Metallic paint will be standard in Australia, meaning buyers should have a choice between Glacier White, Mythos Black, Navarra Blue, Python Yellow (above) and Tango Red colours for no additional cost, plus Ibis White and Turbo Blue (below) solid hues.

Daytona Grey Pearl will likely carry a circa-$1000 premium, while a range of Audi Exclusive colours will be available for an extra $3800.

The 2022 Audi S3 is due to reach Australian showrooms in the fourth quarter of 2021 (October to December inclusive), according to dealer estimates. Audi Australia has officially confirmed local launches for the S3 and its regular A3 sibling in the second half of 2021.

Stay tuned to CarAdvice for the release of official pricing and specifications closer to launch.
