VFACTS May 2021: Ford Mustang gets a sales boost from limited-edition Mach 1

Ford Mustang sales have slowed after reaching a peak in Australia four years ago. But there are some signs of recovery as it approaches the end of its current model cycle.

The Ford Mustang has had a brief reprieve from its sustained sales slide, with the Mach 1 limited-edition contributing to a momentary spike.

Sales have largely been in freefall after reaching a peak in Australia four years ago. But limited editions such as the Bullitt, R-Spec and, now, the Mach 1, have helped drive a modest recovery.

Sports cars and muscle cars tend to have a short shelf life and demand tapers after the initial hype subsides.

Figures published by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries show more than 1300 Ford Mustangs have been reported as sold so far this year, an increase of 14.4 per cent in a market that grew by 37.5 per cent over the same period.

While the Mustang's sales growth is slower than the rest of the new-car market, a large proportion of those deliveries are believed to be the Mach 1 edition, of which 700 were imported into Australia.

The Ford Mustang posted its strongest sales in 2017, with 9165 examples reported as sold. Since then, sales have fallen by 68 per cent between 2018 and 2020.

"There are always going to be ups and downs in a model but we've been really pleased at how Australian's have reacted to how we've kept it fresh with new special editions, like the Mustang Mach 1. The variety and the range is what has kept people interested and kept them selling." says Matt Moran, Communications Director, Australia & New Zealand at Ford Motor Company.
